The Way of Gracie Jiu Jitsu: An Interview with Daniel Gracie
One of the best things about Renzo Gracie NH Jiu Jitsu is that we get to experience the best of the best instructors. Not too long ago, Rolles Gracie was up for a weekend seminar and a few days ago, the Renzo Gracie NH team in Exeter had Daniel Gracie stop in to teach a class.
I had the honor of sitting down with Professor Daniel and chatting about all things Gracie Jiu Jitsu.
Let me tell you a little about Daniel.
Daniel Gracie is a 5th degree black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He has training academies in the United States, Brazil, and Japan.
In Brazil, Daniel trained under Carlinhos Gracie and received his Black Belt from him at the age of twenty-three. Daniel began competing in various city and state Jiu-Jitsu tournaments in 1982.
Beginning in 1994, Daniel competed in the Brasilian Nationals and in the Mundials. His submission grappling career includes two events in 2003 and in 2005.
In Japan, the Gracie family were regular competitors in the PRIDE events. Beginning in 2002, Daniel fought in four PRIDE events as a Heavyweight, winning three times. Daniel fought against some of Japan’s top competitors, each time in an arena with well over 60,000 fans.
In Europe, Daniel has fought in the inaugural IFC Israel Fighting Championship in Tel Aviv, Israel in 2010. He won by Rear Naked Choke over his opponent Martin Wojcik.
Listen in as Daniel talks about:
- How he began training with Renzo Gracie to fight mixed martial arts
- How he trains and conditions fighters as they get ready to compete
- How he’d teach you to get good at knee on belly
- His favorite take downs and submissions
and…
- His 3 favorite training tips for students of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
Throughout our conversation, you’ll learn what I learned – the way of Gracie Jiu Jitsu is more than a sport or martial art…it’s a way of life.
